Background

The special exhibition Kitano Tenjin: Legends of a Shinto God commemorates the 1125th anniversary of the death of Sugawara no Michizane (845–903), the brilliant Heian-period scholar who was posthumously deified as Tenjin, the god of learning. Michizane’s life—from his rise as a top government official to his tragic exile in Kyushu and his eventual transformation into a powerful deity—has inspired over a millennium of artistic devotion. This exhibition marks a historic milestone by displaying treasures from Tenmangu shrines across Japan, reflecting the deep-seated “Tenjin faith” that remains central to Japanese culture and education today.

A primary highlight of this exhibition is the rare display of the National Treasure Illustrated Legends of the Kitano Tenjin Shrine (Kitano Tenjin engi emaki, Jōkyū version). For the first time in history, every single scene from all volumes of this 13th-century masterpiece will be exhibited throughout the run. Visitors can witness the dramatic narrative of Michizane’s life through exquisite Kamakura-period brushwork, alongside recently uncovered artifacts and masterpieces of calligraphy, painting, and craft that illustrate how the legend of Tenjin evolved from a vengeful spirit into a compassionate patron of literature and the arts.
